Acupuncture Point: The Right Place Matters
from:An “acupuncture point” is the location on the body targeted by the acupuncturist. In this Chinese medicine and alternative treatment, tiny needles are placed into the skin at these points. The main theory behind these acupuncture points is to restore the normal flow of ‘qi’ which is the energy force within the body, to its normal state. Once the energy force stabilizes or equalizes, the body can heal and overcome illnesses and ailments.
The term for an acupuncture point is “acupoints”. There are other ways to perform acupuncture besides using needles, such as aucupressure, sonopuncture, and laser-type acupuncture. The science behind acupuncture is the belief that the body is connected through various points, called meridians. Each meridian targets energy to a specific organs or areas of the body. In addition to meridians, there are other important locations not associated with the meridian points.
The first thing a professional acupuncturist will do when you first visit is assess your condition by giving you a thorough exam. During this process, they will determine the potential problems and which type or types of alternative medicine procedures should be used. This examination will tell the acupuncture specialist where to put the needles on your body and also if a combination of acupuncture and other alternative medicine procedures to consider. In many cases, one meridian or location of the body may not be effective – the flow of energy to treat many illnesses require more than one location.
The training to become an acupuncture specialist is quite detailed. The ‘points’ associated with the energy flow of acupuncture is very complicated; however once learned, the points are the same on all bodies.
There are also various categories of points throughout the body. For example, there are the Five Transporting acupuncture points. The five methods are called Jing well, Ying spring, Shu stream, Jing River and He sea. In this category, the qi flows much like a river through the body. In this method, there are several types of treatment administered, each associated with these points.
When you visit an acupuncture medical office, notice all of the charts on the wall. They are a great reference for the procedures that will be performed on you and will serve as a topic of conversation with your acupuncture specialist.
